Red Precious Coral
Red Precious Coral, or Corallium rubrum, is a form of coral that grows in rocky tropical seabeds with low levels of sedimentation. It typically develops in dark and deep caverns or crevices of over 500 feet below sea level. Coral grows astonishingly slow; frequently as little as just 1 millimeter per year.
Due to environmental changes, the amount of red coral available has been radically reduced. There are now specific, protected areas where coral is being rehabilitated.
Corallium rubrum is sometimes known as “Noble Coral” and is considered to be the most desirable form of coral for jewelry use. Coral has a hardness of 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale so it should be handled with extra care.
